Go! Southampton Christmas Projection Mapping

How do you bring a town’s history to life whilst celebrating Christmas?

The answer?

Creative flair and inspired storytelling conveyed through state-of-the-art projection mapping technology. That’s exactly what Blitz provided.

GO! Southampton is the Business Improvement District (BID) for Southampton City Centre. Funded and led by local business, the BID is using its 5-year term to implement a range of initiatives that will create a greater city entre experience, deliver better marketing and events and develop stronger business.  Working in partnership with local stakeholders, the BID’s ultimate aim is to realise Southampton’s potential as a world-class city, which will in turn benefit residents, visitors and the businesses that fund it.

The Challenge

Go! Southampton decided on an initiative for Christmas which would help bring to life the story of Southampton’s unique history to be displayed on the iconic Grade I listed Bargate medieval gatehouse.

Samuel Iwaniak, senior designer at Blitz who led the project explained: “Our biggest challenge was the unique canvas of the building on which the creative is displayed. The visuals needed to span the length of the Northside of the structure which unfortunately is not the most level due to its heritage.”

In addition, Blitz were required to incorporate messages from several stakeholders across the city including ABP Port of Southampton, Southampton Football Club, toob and the city’s archives.

The Solution

The creative team at Blitz developed the concept and creative of the Christmas Giant who narrated tales of Southampton’s past, present, and future featuring messages relating to each stakeholder and the mythical founder of Southampton – Sir Bevois!

Using state of the art mapping technology, the projections revealed a unique visual experience never seen in the city before bringing the building to life.

Results

The Blitz team delivered a fantastic storytelling experience over the three-day period which wowed the community!

Giles Semper, Chief Executive of Go! Southampton commented:

“It was quite amazing to see 21st-century technology used on such an ancient monument and the effect was absolutely knockout. The projections not only demonstrate the rich and varied history of Southampton, but also showcase our city’s exciting future.”
